Chapter 10

Matt had arrived late to the morning’s meeting since he’d spent it watching the newly formed firecracker flowers practice firing down their range. His new ranged unit had formed in the morning, and he had to admit, he’d been excited to see exactly what they could do.

First thing that struck him was that they were weird looking. The plants themselves were extremely thin, with long and broad leaves that shielded their main stems. These leaves wrapped all around them, with a quartet of long arms which each had the seed pods that gave the firecracker flowers their name. At the end of the seed pods, the occasional pale salmon and orange flower with drooping petals sat. These petals when present hid the seed pods and the vines that ran down the arm. As for a head – it was pretty much non-existent. They just reached upwards, ending in a nub or a couple of branches that he assumed would eventually form into new arms.

Perhaps an upgraded firecracker flower unit had six arms instead of four? And then eight? Now that’d be a sight to behold.

So was the sight of the entire unit loosing attacks. It seemed those vines that ran across their backs along their arms were filled with water, for they would pump them into their swaying seed pods at the ends of their arms. Once the water contacted the pods, the pods themselves would explode, scattering vegetable matter shrapnel all over the surroundings. The explosion was rather loud, like a man slamming a heavy dictionary down on a wooden table, but not loud like gunfire.

No snipers these firecracker flowers but closer to a shotgun round, except with smaller spread. Or something like that. At least, he thought so. Realistically, Matt’s understanding of shotguns was mostly from 80’s action films and even he knew that people didn’t fly through the air from shotgun blasts. So all of it was suspect. What he did know was that the ranged attacks could pepper an area about forty feet away with shells around the size of his torso. Further than that, and the effectiveness seemed to drop off pretty badly.

Not really what he had been imagining when he’d picked the firecracker flowers. Perhaps the squirting cucumbers would have been better and more focused, but here he was with what he had. Anyway, having them lean over the walls and unleash an armful of seed shrapnel was something he was rather looking forward to seeing.

“Any news, Braskar?” Matt called out, dithering a little before making the purchase he knew he was going to make anyway. Just in case his Warlord found something up there. Not that he had that many choices he could make.

That was the thing about these kinds of games. Once you started down a path, it was really hard to course correct at speed. Perhaps in the future, when he had a lot more building options, a lot more units, a lot more gold. But right now, his options were just tiny.
